내로남불 영어로

내로남불은 과연 영어로 뭐라할까? 참고로 내로남불은 "내가 하면 로맨스, 남이 하면 불륜으로" 한마디로 이중 잣대입니다. If I do it, It's romance...but if you do it, it's an affair (이건 완전 직역인데 외국인들이 알아 들을 수 있을까? 그래서 구글에다 내로남불 어떻게 영어로 말하는지 내로남불 영어로 쳐봤습니다. 

 

Hypocrisy (hypocritical) 위선 (위선적인)

 

(출처) 타일러 진짜 미국식 영어 hypocrisy 위선, hypocritical 위선적인 영어 표현들을 활용하여 내로남불을  표현할 수 있다고 하네요. 그래서 해당 위선적인 이라는 뜻을 가진 hypocritical, hypocrisy을 활용하여 몇 가지 예문을 한번 만들어봤습니다.

 

• His hypocrisy is astounding. He criticizes others for being late but is always late himself. 걔 위선 진짜 경악스러워. 다른 사람 지각한다고 지각하는데 지는 맨날 지각해. 
• it's hypocritical to tell others to save money while spending lavishly yourself. 다른 사람한테 돈 아끼라면서 스스로는 사치스럽게 소비하는 건 위선적이야.
• it's hypocritical of him to criticize my diet when she eats funk food quite often. 자주 정크 푸드 먹으면서 내 식단을 비판하는 건 위선적이야.
• It's hypocritical to demand respect when you don't give it to others. 다른 사람을 존중하지 않으면서 존중을 요구하는 건 위선적이야. 

물론 앞서 말했지만 내로남불 자체가 사실 이중잣대이기때문에 Hypocrisy(위선) 이라는 말 대신에 Double Standards (이중잣대)라는 표현을 활용하여 말할 수도 있습니다.  It's a double standard when employees are criticized for taking breaks, but managers leave early without asking.  (직원들한테는 시간 것 가지고 뭐라하더니 물어보지도 않고 관리자들은 빨리 퇴근하는 건 이중 잣대야)

 

Double Standard 이중잣대

• Expecting employees to work overtime but refusing to pay them fairly is a clear double standard. 직원들한테 야근을 기대하더니 공정하게 돈은 안주는 건 명백한 이중잣대(내로남불)야.
• Punishing one group for breaking the rules but letting another group go free is a double standard. 어떤 규칙을 어긴 집단한테는 처벌하면서 다른 집단은 봐주는 건 이중잣대(내로남불)야.
